RWBY - Volume 2

RWBY season 2 is a huge improvement on season 1. It’s much longer so there’s more time to develop both story and character. The fight scenes are brilliant. It is during these moments where the stiff cgi animation transforms and really comes to life. The opening episode's food fight scene alone is the best thing I've seen for ages - it's wonderfully inventive and hugely entertaining, I mean, roast chicken boxing gloves anyone? We also see the addition of a lot of new characters.

That animation style, well, I’m never going to warm to it. When the scenes are not fast paced the characters walk around like store mannequins plus they all have such enormous chunky hands, it's quite off-putting. But you can at least see that the animation team have improved on the rendering, created more intricate worlds and added more detail to everything compared to the first season. There are also a lot more gags and laugh out loud moments this season. And, considering how stiff the figures are drawn, I’m really warming to them as characters - that's all thanks to the excellent writing.

Blake is my favourite so far - shy, introverted, prone to brooding and has cute cat ears - she reminds me a lot of me when I was a teenager, not the ears of course! Emerald, Mercury and Cinder form a villainous trio. Emerald being the first notably dark-skinned character on the show - yes I did worry about the diversity of the cast!

Sadly I’ve just read about how the show’s creator Monty Oum died after making season two. He went to hospital and died from a freak allergic reaction to the medication. He was only 33 years old. What a devastating blow to his family and to the RWBY team, so very sad. Season three will be interesting to watch as this will be the one without Oum at the helm. #

A very entertaining 7.5/10
